The Butcher’s Block and Smokehouse Wanaka opened in December 2015 with a retail store in Reece Crescent, Wanaka. Business partners Bruce Scott and Jeff Smith moved from north of Auckland to create Wanaka’s only dedicated butchery with a focus on quality fresh meats and a range of handmade smallgoods and smoked products created onsite.

Bruce and Jeff’s experience and skills complement each other. Bruce has been a butcher since he was 15 and believes in quality first with a focus on traditional cuts and flavours that make the most of prime meat. Jeff has a manufacturing background and quickly learned all the processes needed to create handmade sausages, bacon, ham and salami.

People often ask how Bruce and Jeff met – because of Jeff’s fine lambs. Jeff and his wife had a lifestyle block in Kaukapakapa and Bruce was their homekill butcher. A competitive shooter who’s represented New Zealand, Bruce was in Wanaka for a shooting competition early in 2015 and noted there was no dedicated butcher in town. Both men were looking for new opportunities and Wanaka, as we know, is an awesome place to live. Within four months of looking at the Reece Crescent premises, both families had relocated, and The Butcher’s Block and Smokehouse was opened just 11 days before Christmas in 2015!

By April 2016, the Ministry of Primary Industries approved The Butcher’s Block application as a dual process operator, meaning we could process homekill and recreational hunted game. Later that year, we put our purpose-built homekill trailer on the road to also offer a mobile homekill slaughtering service.

No business thrives without the support of its customers and Bruce, Jeff and our growing team are very appreciative of the custom and positive feedback of many happy customers. We love being part of the Wanaka community as your local butcher, a wholesale meat supplier to local restaurants and food outlets and providers of homekill butchery and services that are valued by farmers and hunters around the region.
