The Butcher’s Block and Smokehouse is co-owned by Wanaka locals Jeff Smith and Adam Mulholland.
We embrace the concept of paddock-to-plate eating wherever possible, sourcing our meats from fully traceable New Zealand suppliers, all in the South Island.
We are proud to be Wanaka’s only dedicated butcher supplying quality fresh meats and handcrafted meat products like bacon, ham and salami to locals as well meat-loving customers all over New Zealand. Have a look around – we think you’ll find our prices are very reasonable for meats of this quality.
Try our locally-farmed beef and lamb – you will taste the quality of these prime steaks, chops, roasts and other favourite cuts of New Zealand grass-fed beef and lamb. If hogget or mutton is more to your taste, we will help there where we can too (but they’re not easy to get!).
We utilise fantastic pork from Freedom Farms which is free-farmed under higher welfare principles and offers you paddock-to-plate traceability. Find out more about our fresh NZ pork supplies.
Our fresh cage-free chicken comes from New Zealand’s largest and most respected supplier, Tegel. Find out more about their farming principles.
Our wild venison is sourced from Alpine Deer, specialists of wild deer harvesting from the pristine environs of our beautiful Southern Alps.
We love receiving premium salmon from Mt Cook Alpine Salmon near Tekapo, when available.
Our retail store at 33 Reece Crescent, Wanaka is open six days a week and our online store is open 24/7 with the options of overnight home delivery anywhere in New Zealand and click and collect orders for locals to pick up.
Our passion for quality flows through into our handcrafted meat products like smoked bacon, ham, salami, biersticks and chorizo – real meat and quality ingredients combine to create great flavour in our flagship products. Our smoked hams on the bone are the centrepiece on many Kiwi Christmas tables! Our real meat sausages are hand-tied and offer an array of plain and flavoured options to tempt your tastebuds. Other traditional Kiwi butcher’s products like saveloys, cheerios and luncheon are always popular – do try the smoked saveloys! Many options are gluten-free and we offer preservative-free sausages and nitrate-free bacon if you prefer. All of these fine handmade meat products are available for our homekill and game hunting customers too.
We are licenced as a Dual Operator Butcher by the Ministry of Primary Industries to also provide butchery processing services to homekill customers and recreational hunters.
The Butcher’s Block and Smokehouse – all traditions should taste this good.

Some background on our family owned business
Adam Mulholland is an Otago local, born and bred. A keen hunter and fisher since childhood, Adam moved to Wanaka to complete his butchery apprenticeship with Prime Cut Meats in the late 2000s. After a decade in the Maniototo, Adam took a fulltime butcher’s role with The Butcher’s Block in 2019 before buying into the business in 2020.
Adam’s partner Lisha is also a key member of The Butcher’s Block team, looking after the shop and customers day to day.
Jeff Smith hails from Auckland and fulfilled a long-held dream to move to Central Otago with his wife, Kate, when The Butcher’s Block was established in 2015. Jeff’s background in manufacturing, head for figures and love of great meat makes him the perfect person to head the processing side of the business and manage the accounts.
Kate looks after the marketing, social media and website side of things, alongside her own business ventures in PR and book retailing.
